Tension flared in Sagar on Saturday as BJP and Congress workers clashed following protests by Youth Congress during the prestigious India AI Impact Summit 2026 held at
Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.

BJP and its youth wing staged a gherao of the Congress office, burning effigies of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. Congress workers, already gathered in large numbers, retaliated with counter-slogans and effigy burnings of the Chief Minister and the Urban Administration Minister.

The confrontation escalated into chaos, with both sides allegedly hurling slippers, chairs, sticks, and brooms. Police deployed heavy barricades and eventually used water cannons to disperse the crowd.

Political Impact

The incident reflects the deepening political polarisation between the BJP and the Congress, with national-level disputes increasingly spilling onto local streets.

While the BJP framed its protest as a defence of national prestige at an international summit, the Congress projected its resistance as a fight against alleged authoritarianism and policy failures.

However, the descent into physical confrontation—marked by effigy burnings, object throwing, and police intervention—raises concerns about shrinking democratic space and the normalisation of aggressive street politics. Instead of substantive debate on AI policy or governance issues, both parties appeared focused on symbolic retaliation.

Such clashes risk undermining public faith in democratic discourse and diverting attention from pressing developmental concerns.

Bundelkhand Nirman Morcha President Bhanu Sahay, addressing a press conference, said that people of the Bundelkhand region have been demanding a separate state for years. He recalled that in 2014, a promise was made to the public to create a separate Bundelkhand state, which led the people of the region to extend strong support to the government.

Sahay said that after the conclusion of the yatra on March 15, effigies of leaders who went back on their promise of forming Bundelkhand state would be burnt as a mark of protest. He expressed disappointment that even after 12 years, the promise remains unfulfilled, leaving the people of Bundelkhand feeling betrayed.

He pointed out that the region continues to suffer from serious problems such as unemployment, poverty, drought, migration, and lack of adequate education and healthcare facilities. According to him, a permanent solution to these issues is not possible without the formation of a separate Bundelkhand state. Repeated assurances without concrete action, he said, amount to a breach of public trust.

Bhanu Sahay informed that the first phase of the public anger Rath Yatra (Jan Aakrosh Rath Yatra) will be undertaken from February 16 to March 13, starting from Vanvasi Ram in Chitrakoot and concluding at Ram Raja Sarkar’s feet in Orchha Dham. The yatra will pass through Chitrakoot, Banda, Panna, Damoh, Sagar, Tikamgarh, Lalitpur, Datia, Orai, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Chhatarpur, Niwari, Jhansi Dehat, Jhansi, and Orchha.

He said the yatra aims to mobilize nearly one lakh committed Bundeli volunteers from every village and hamlet of the region. During the yatra, the “Ram Ko Call” (Oath in the name of Lord Ram) campaign will be restarted to expose public representatives who do not support the demand for a Bundelkhand state. This time, participants will also take an oath with Ganga water.

Sahay warned that public representatives who oppose the formation of the Bundelkhand state will be politically defeated in the upcoming elections. He added that leaders who raise the issue only during election time will no longer be accepted. “Those who are not with Bundelkhand are of no use,” he asserted.

The District City Congress Committee, Sagar, on Friday strongly accused the BJP governments at the Centre and in Madhya Pradesh of attacking people’s basic rights and weakening democracy.

Addressing a press conference, District City Congress President Mahesh Jatav said that rising unemployment, loss of labour rights, unsafe drinking water and alleged manipulation of voter lists have become the most serious current issues facing the country.

Top Priority Issues Raised:

1. Threat to Employment and MNREGA:
Mahesh Jatav said the BJP-led central government is weakening the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), which once gave poor rural families a legal right to work.

He alleged that changes in the scheme, low wages, no budget increase despite inflation, and strict rules like mandatory apps and Aadhaar-based payments have deprived nearly 2 crore workers of employment.

Congress demanded restoration of legal job guarantee and an increase in daily wages to ₹400.

Calling the Indore water contamination incident an “administrative massacre”, Congress leaders said it is shocking that people are dying after drinking polluted water in a city ranked number one in cleanliness.

They blamed corruption, poor planning and negligence for mixing of drinking water and drainage lines, despite spending crores of rupees.

3. Alleged Voter List Manipulation (SIR):
Congress termed the deletion of around 40,000 names from the Sagar Assembly voter list a major democratic issue. Mahesh Jatav alleged this was a case of “vote theft” and questioned why officials involved in adding and deleting names were not punished. The party said such actions directly harm free and fair elections.

4. Centralised Control and Contractor System:
State Congress spokesperson Dr Sandeep Sablok alleged that new changes in MNREGA are bringing back the contractor system, reducing the powers of village panchayats and shifting decisions to Delhi, which hurts local workers.

Political Action Ahead:
Senior leader Amit Ramji Dubey announced a statewide movement under the leadership of MP Congress President Jitu Patwari, starting with a major protest in Indore on January 11, against what Congress called the BJP’s “three-way failure” — jobs, basic services and voting rights.

Leader of Opposition in the Municipal Corporation, Babu Singh Babbu Yadav, warned of a large protest in cities over pipeline leakages and contaminated water, saying repeated warnings to civic bodies have been ignored.

Congress leaders said they will take these issues directly to the public, calling them matters of livelihood, health and democracy, which cannot be ignored any longer.

A district-level conference of the Samajwadi Party (SP) was organised in Sagar, where party leaders underlined that organisational expansion and a sustained fight for the rights of the common people remain the party’s primary objectives.

Addressing a press conference, Madhya Pradesh Samajwadi Party State President Shri Manoj Yadav strongly criticised the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in the state, alleging that they have failed on key issues concerning farmers, women and the poor

He said farmers are not receiving fertiliser, electricity and water on time, nor are they getting fair prices for their produce. Inadequate power supply, he added, is severely affecting irrigation. He demanded 24-hour electricity for farmers.

Shri Manoj Yadav said that under the leadership of Akhilesh Yadav, the Samajwadi Party has emerged as the third-largest party in the country and the strongest voice for the poor, backward classes, Scheduled Castes, women and the common citizen

Calling the situation in Madhya Pradesh alarming, he said unemployment is rising, the government is dependent on loans, and youth are still waiting for jobs. He further claimed that the state has reached the top in cases of atrocities against the Scheduled Castes, tribals and women.

Raising a key regional concern, former minister Badshah Singh said that the development of Bundelkhand is incomplete unless migration is stopped. He pointed out that thousands of people migrate daily to other states in search of labour work, while the government remains occupied with investment summits.

He said Sagar, being a divisional headquarters, will witness accelerated organisational activities, and efforts will be intensified to connect the masses with the party. He added that the party will actively prepare to contest the upcoming panchayat and municipal elections with full strength.

Presiding over the meeting, District President Rajesh Athiya outlined the party’s organisational roadmap and said the Samajwadi Party would be strengthened up to the block level.

Once regarded as the second-in-command during former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s tenure, senior BJP leader and Khurai MLA Bhupendra Singhwho served as Home Minister in the previous cabinet—appears to be voicing his discontent after being left out of the current cabinet formation.

Speaking at a Diwali Milan event in Baghraj Ward, Singh delivered a philosophically loaded speech centered on “values, culture, and morality.” However, Seasoned political observers see it as a subtle reflection of his current disenchantment and an indirect commentary on the shifting power equations within the BJP.

Without directly naming anyone, Singh criticized opportunistic politics, asserting that it weakens democracy and erodes public faith in the political system—a remark that many interpret as a veiled attack on his intra-party rival.  Who, before long, defected from the Congress.

His statement that “politics should be a medium of service, not self-gain” was widely read as an expression of ideological frustration over recent developments within the state’s political landscape.

Throughout his address, Singh emphasized that character, values, and culture form the foundation of life, arguing that wealth is meaningless without moral grounding.

Sagar Watch News

In a speech blending cultural conservatism and social commentary, he invoked mythological references such as Abhimanyu's learning in the womb, stressing the role of mothers in nurturing values and condemning the modern obsession with mobile phones and materialism.

Sagar Watch News

In political terms, Singh’s remarks carry undertones of moral positioning and self-reassertion—an attempt to project himself as a custodian of traditional BJP values and public service ethics at a time when he feels marginalized in the current power setup

His critique of “corrupt and opportunistic politics” and appeal for “youth with character to enter public life” underscores his effort to reclaim ideological relevance amid shifting loyalties and internal rivalries.

While maintaining a public tone of cultural and social reform, Bhupendra Singh’s speech reflects a deeper sentiment—a senior leader seeking to reaffirm his political stature in an environment where his once-commanding influence within the party has notably diminished.

Patron of the Democratic Samajwadi Party Raghu Thakur stated that the provisions of the 123rd Amendment Bill introduced in Parliament are undemocratic and will establish a dictatorship of a single ruling party in the country. However, this bill has been sent to the Parliamentary Committee after being introduced in the Parliament.

While talking to journalists today, Mr. Thakur said that there is incompleteness in both the ruling and the opposition. The government claims that the bill has been introduced for purity, but this will place the decision of purity solely in the hands of the government.

In this regard, Mr. Thakur suggested that if there is a provision for removal from the post if bail is not granted within 30 days, then this amendment should also be made so that the decision from the interim appeal should come out within 29 days.

He said that in the past, he remained in jail for 22 months, and later the investigating agency said that no evidence was found against him. It is his moral responsibility to voluntarily resign from the post, but removing him by making legal provisions is neither judicial nor democratic. Mr Thakur said that the opposition also raised a hue and cry, but no logical debate was made.

The Loktantrik Samajwadi Party has sent a letter to the Home Minister demanding that a provision be added so that in any case the final appellate court's decision comes within 29 days, or the person should not be removed from the post till the final appellate decision, it should be left to the person. Along with this, action should also be taken against those investigation agencies which suspend the investigation after the arrest.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), today, staged a massive protest outside Sagar Municipal Corporation against what it termed as “criminal negligence and corruption” by officials and contractors.
The protest, joined by party members and a large number of citizens, including women, took place despite heavy rainfall.

Public Anger Over Negligence

Residents from various wards raised their voices against severe problems such as waterlogging, unplanned road construction, and incomplete sewer projects. Protesters alleged that poor planning and collusion between officials and contractors had turned several neighborhoods into “water cities,” pushing people into a swamp of diseases and hardships.

Engineer D.K. Singh told the media:

  • “The sewer project is riddled with corruption. Contractors abandoned incomplete work while officials turned a blind eye. People are falling, getting injured, and suffering daily, while files are just being shuffled in offices.”

Memorandum and Key Demands

AAP submitted a memorandum to the Municipal Commissioner, demanding urgent corrective measures:

  • Immediate drainage arrangements in all waterlogged areas.

  • Review of wrongly elevated roads and provision of proper drainage channels.

  • High-level inquiry into corruption in the sewer project with strict action against guilty contractors and officials.

  • Immediate repair of unfinished and dug-up roads.

  • Future construction projects to be undertaken only after proper geographical and technical surveys.

The Additional Commissioner assured in writing that a reply to the memorandum would be given within three days.
