Sagar Watch News/Dr Harisingh Gour University, Sagar, is celebrating Gaur Utsav 2025 from November 19–26 to mark the 156th birth anniversary of its founder, legendary educationist and legal luminary Dr Sir Harisingh Gour.
As part of the celebrations, a vibrant cultural program of affiliated colleges was held at the Golden Jubilee Auditorium, presided over by Vice-Chancellor Prof. V.S. Thakur with MLA Bhupendra Singh Thakur as the chief guest.
A major highlight was Prof. Thakur’s strong emphasis on youth empowerment, stating that disciplined, well-guided young people form the “strongest foundation of national development.”
He highlighted the importance of NCC in shaping leadership, discipline, patriotism and social responsibility, urging students to participate in social service, environmental protection and community work along with academics.
Chief guest Bhupendra Singh delivered a powerful address recalling the university’s extraordinary legacy—
-
Asia’s only university established entirely by one individual’s donation,
-
A pioneering institution that once offered subjects like Criminology and Pharmacy, unavailable elsewhere in India,
-
A historic global centre with 25% foreign students,
-
And a campus with 160 affiliated colleges during its early years.
He narrated episodes from his student life and emphasised Dr Gour’s unmatched vision in choosing Sagar as the university’s location, so that local youth could access quality higher education without having to leave home.
He also highlighted Dr Gour’s national contributions, including advocating for the formation of the Supreme Court, securing women’s right to practice law (1923), and initiating the proposal that led to India’s first postage stamp printing unit in Nashik.
Singh proudly noted that 11 university teachers were recently featured in Stanford’s global rankings, calling it a moment of pride for the entire region. He also cautioned students about the negative influence of misleading information on social media.
The cultural segment showcased captivating performances by various colleges, including Krishna Raasleela, tribal dances, folk dances, semiclassical acts, women empowerment–themed performances, Marathi dance, skits promoting mobile awareness, and the university’s renowned Badhai Dance, which once earned first prize at the global level.
The event reflected both the historic pride and the dynamic cultural spirit of Dr. Harisingh Gour University.
