Sagar Watch News (Madhya Pradesh), March 25/ Marking his birthday with a strong conservation push, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav will release a dozen turtles into the Bamner River at the Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve on Wednesday, while also laying the foundation for a soft-release enclosure to facilitate the reintroduction of cheetahs.
The Chief Minister’s visit underscores the state’s expanding wildlife conservation agenda, with the reserve emerging as a key hub for biodiversity and future eco-tourism.
Key Points :
- Wildlife Conservation Drive: Around a dozen turtles will be released into the Bamner River to strengthen aquatic biodiversity.
- Cheetah Reintroduction Plan: Foundation stone to be laid for a “soft release boma,” a crucial step for rehabilitating cheetahs in the reserve.
- Largest Tiger Reserve in MP: Spread across 2,339 sq km, the reserve connects 72 villages across Sagar, Damoh and Narsinghpur districts.
- Tiger Population: Currently home to 32 tigers, reinforcing its importance in big cat conservation.
- ‘Land of Wolves’: Known for having one of the highest populations of wolves in the region.
- Rich Avifauna: Hosts over 240 species of birds, making it a major attraction for bird watchers.
- Diverse Wildlife: Habitat to tiger, leopard, wolf, bear, jackal, hyena, fox, nilgai, blackbuck, chinkara, crocodile, and more.
- Cheetah Habitat Potential: The terrain is considered suitable for cheetahs, similar to landscapes found in South Africa, with plans to relocate animals from Kuno National Park.
- Recent Recognition: Declared a tiger reserve in 2023, it is Madhya Pradesh’s 7th and India’s 54th such reserve.
- Tourism & Jobs: The reserve holds significant potential for eco-tourism and local employment generation.
Officials say the combined initiatives—from species reintroduction to habitat strengthening—signal a long-term vision to transform the reserve into a flagship wildlife destination in central India
