Renowned folk artist Bhagwandas Raikwar, who dedicated his life to preserving Bundeli folk art and traditional martial practices, has been selected for the Padma Shri Award 2026. He has been honoured under the ‘Unsung Heroes’ category, recognising individuals who have served society and culture selflessly without seeking publicity.

A lifelong custodian of Bundelkhand’s rich cultural heritage, Raikwar is being honoured for his outstanding contribution to the conservation, promotion and transmission of Bundeli folk traditions and indigenous martial arts. The Government of India acknowledged his decades-long grassroots work that kept several fading art forms alive.
Born on January 2, 1944, in Sagar to late Gorelal Raikwar, Bhagwandas Raikwar embodies the spirit of Bundelkhand, where folk life, valour and cultural discipline coexist. Through the akhara tradition, he preserved and taught traditional combat skills such as lathi, spear, sword, shield, trident, farsa, along with folk dance, music, weaponry and even kabaddi, ensuring their continuity among younger generations.
Despite limited resources, he developed Shri Chhatrasal Vyayamshala into a hub of cultural and physical training, instilling discipline, history and values alongside physical fitness. He has represented Bundeli culture at major national and international platforms, including the Mahakumbh, folk festivals, national theatre events and cultural fairs, introducing audiences to Bundelkhand’s heroic legacy. His efforts also helped revive several endangered folk traditions and provided recognition to local artists.
Raikwar’s life stands out for treating art as spiritual practice rather than livelihood. Avoiding fame and accolades, he remained focused on service—making his selection in the ‘Unsung Heroes’ category especially significant.
Following the announcement of the Padma Shri 2026, a wave of joy and pride has swept across Bundelkhand and the state. Cultural scholars, artists and citizens have termed it a historic honour for Bundeli culture, calling it both a recognition of Bhagwandas Raikwar’s lifelong dedication and an inspiration for countless folk artists preserving tradition at the grassroots.
