Sagar Watch News | In a solemn literary gathering, the 101st birth anniversary of veteran writer and journalist Late Dr. Umashankar Shukla was commemorated at the Swaraj Auditorium of Shri Saraswati Library and Reading Room, Teenbatti, on Tuesday. The event highlighted Dr. Shukla’s lasting contributions to literature, journalism, and the cultural heritage of Sagar.
Highlights of the Program
Former MP Lakshminarayan Yadav presided over the ceremony.
Chief Guest: Prof. V. S. Thakur, Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Harisingh Gour Central University, Sagar.
Keynote Speaker: Deepak Tiwari, former Vice-Chancellor, Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism, Bhopal.
Special Mention: Dr. Shukla’s significant role in installing the statue of poet Padmakar at Sagar’s Chakaraghat.
Event Proceedings
The programme began with floral tributes to Goddess Saraswati followed by the ceremonial welcome of guests.
Library Trust Secretary Shukdev Prasad Tiwari delivered the welcome address and presented an overview of Dr. Shukla’s life and literary journey.
Trust President K. K. Silakari reflected on Dr. Shukla’s contribution to literature and journalism, emphasising his efforts toward preserving Sagar’s cultural identity.
Speeches & Reflections
Keynote Speaker Deepak Tiwari remarked that celebrating Dr. Shukla even after 101 years proves the magnitude of his service to society. He emphasised the need to introduce the younger generation to Sagar’s literary stalwarts and suggested publishing a book based on Dr. Shukla’s life.
He also highlighted the importance of scientific temperament in society and said that citizens must question leaders on issues like rising unemployment and concentration of wealth.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. V. S. Thakur stated that Dr. Umashankar Shukla held a distinguished place in Sagar’s literary and journalistic circles. Renowned scholar Nand Dulare Bajpai had once referred to Shukla as “the second Premchand,” he noted, underscoring the inspirational nature of his life.
Former MP Lakshminarayan Yadav, presiding over the event, recalled Dr. Shukla as a close friend and assured that the library would continue organising such programmes to honour Sagar’s eminent personalities.
