Sagar Watch News/ The Council of Ministers has granted in-principle approval to develop Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve, Nauradehi, located in Sagar district, as the third habitat for cheetahs in Madhya Pradesh.
Notably, India’s cheetah reintroduction program has been progressing in phases. The first cheetah habitat was established at Kuno National Park, Sheopur, in September 2022, followed by the second habitat launched in April 2025 at Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary, Mandsaur.
According to official data, Madhya Pradesh currently hosts 31 cheetahs—28 in Kuno National Park and 2 in Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary. The state’s cheetah population is expected to grow further, as eight additional cheetahs from Botswana are likely to arrive in Kuno by January 2026.
With the Cabinet’s approval, Nauradehi is now set to play a crucial role in expanding and strengthening India’s ambitious cheetah conservation initiative.
