Serious questions are being raised about the awareness and monitoring mechanisms of the Mining Department after a large-scale illegal murum (morrum) mining operation reportedly proceeded without any prior input or action from the department. The fact that such illegal excavation was carried out openly and remained undetected for a long period has now become a matter of concern.
Sagar Watch News/ The district administration has imposed a penalty of more than ₹1 crore on Ajay Buildcon for alleged illegal excavation of murum. Along with the fine, a show-cause notice has been issued to Ajay Buildcon (near Royal Palace, tehsil and district Sagar), directing the firm to appear on the scheduled date of hearing and submit a satisfactory explanation supported by documentary evidence regarding the illegal mining activity.
The company has also been instructed to deposit the total penalty amount as prescribed under Rule 18(4) of the Madhya Pradesh Minerals (Prevention of Illegal Mining, Transportation and Storage) Rules, 2022, to settle the case. The order clearly states that failure to comply will invite action under Rule 18(6), under which a penalty double the prescribed amount will be imposed.
According to a report submitted by the Sub-Divisional Officer, Jaisinagar, district Sagar, Ajay Buildcon illegally excavated 9,775 cubic metres of murum without obtaining competent permission. The excavation was carried out from land bearing survey number 693, located in village Bansa under Jaisinagar tehsil, over an area of 1.07 hectares.
The disputed land is recorded as government grazing land (charagah). Officials stated that the land already had a pond-like structure, from which murum was excavated for the construction of the Bansa–Sarkhadi road.
The incident has triggered debate over departmental vigilance and ground-level inspections, with officials now facing questions on how such extensive illegal mining activity continued without timely detection or reporting by the Mining Department.
